Gen, Steve turned into a merman, Tony keeps him

no Steve/Tony romantic relationship.

Tony and Steve have always butted heads and one day Tony just has enough of their captain and departs from the team for a while.
He does his own thing as Iron man for a while, then he gets a call from a teammate insisting he has to see Steve cause something terrible happened to him, but he refuses to say what. Tony is still pissed at him, but it's hard for him to deny that he's a little concerned. And when he goes to the team, they direct him to a pool where he sees Steve swimming in it as a merman. At first he thinks it's a joke they're playing or some trick to get him back on the team, but then he gets proof that it's real, and naturally he's shocked and fascinated.

Merman Steve behaves like a merman. He can't speak human and he has no recollection of who any of them are or that he was once human. As far as he's concerned these humans are dangerous and he's willing to attack if they near him, especially Tony and he doesn't know why.
The team explain whatever happened to make Steve a merman and ask Tony to fix it. In the end, Tony ends up smuggling Steve home, after creating a large enough aquarium. Merman Steve expresses his distrust of Tony who is frustrated at the whole thing, but also fascinated by the creation of a merman, even though it's created out of a man he tends to hate. Still he takes care of Steve while trying to find a way to restore him.
Steve never remembers who Tony is while being a merman, but the longer their time together he starts to trust this odd human.
